During the construction of apartment complexes and other buildings, requirements apply in the areas of fire safety and fire resistance of structural elements. Load-bearing steel structures can be provided with a special fire-retardant coating for this purpose, which ensures that the steel retains its structural properties for a longer period when exposed to high temperatures.
The steel columns of this apartment complex in Amsterdam were also provided with a fire-resistant coating. This protective layer had been applied beforehand at the factory. However, during the transport and assembly of the structural parts, the coating had been damaged in several places.
To restore the required protection of the steel structure, this damage had to be carefully touched up.
Rope access as a solution for limited accessibility
The steel columns were located around a courtyard where the available space was very limited. As a result, positioning and safely maneuvering a cherry picker proved practically impossible.
Rope access offered an efficient solution in this situation. Our technicians were able to reach the various parts of the steel structure directly from the ropes, without the need to erect extensive scaffolding or other temporary access systems.
As a result, the repair work could be carried out in a targeted manner with minimal impact on the limited space in the courtyard.
Repair of the fire-retardant coating
For proper adhesion of the coating system, all loose and damaged parts of the existing coating were first carefully removed. Subsequently, the substrate was prepared and a new fire-retardant protective layer was applied to the damaged areas.
After sufficient curing of the fire-retardant coating, the treated surfaces were re-coated with the required finishing and preservation layer. This restored the coating system and provided renewed protection for the steel structures in question.
Repairing fire-resistant coating with rope access
Damage to fire-retardant coatings regularly occurs during transport, installation, or other work during the construction phase. Especially when this damage is located on hard-to-reach steel structures, rope access can be a suitable method to carry out local repairs.
