Working on the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam is no everyday job. The fact that Sky People was allowed to carry out inspection and maintenance work makes this a project to be proud of.
Met rope access Sky People made the entire construction accessible: from the pylons to deep within the bascule pit. This method was supplemented (where necessary) with scaffolding and aerial work platforms. Naturally, with minimal disruption to road and water traffic.
This allowed the work to be carried out safely and efficiently, while the bridge remained fully operational.
Inspection and preservation of the pylon
The work consisted of inspection, cleaning, and preservation of hard-to-reach structural components. The pylon was fully inspected and treated from the bend to the top. Contamination and corrosion were removed by mechanical means, after which a new protective coating system was applied to protect the structure long-term.
Robotic cleaning of guy wires
The guy wires were cleaned with a specially developed robot that was guided over the cables from the road surface. Algae growth and dirt were effectively removed using high-pressure equipment. This method significantly increased safety and reduced lead time.
Work in the bascule chamber
Inspection and conservation work has been carried out on the counterweight and surrounding structural components in the bascule pit. By working within tightly planned time windows between bridge openings, the bridge remained fully operational for road and shipping traffic. Rope access enabled efficient work in confined spaces with minimal disruption to the surroundings.
